Back in December we attended an event here in Austin called The Running Event. All the big name shoe manufactures showed up with their latest gear. Under Armour was one such manufacturer who brought their shinny new SpeedForm running shoes, the Under Armour Gemini 2 and the Apollo 2. Well we knew we wanted to give these a go and fortunately Under Armour provided 4 pairs for us to test out.
Note: Under Armour also makes a Gemini 2 ‘Record Equipped’ version that retails for $149. The Record Equipped version records running metrics including time, cadence, duration, distance, splits. It also connects to UA MapMyRun to capture GPS info. The difference between the two shoes are the inclusion of the chip and the retail price tag of $149 vs $129.
Below are some pictures from the 2015 The Running Event. As you can see Under Armour really brought it!
What makes the Gemini 2 rather unique is it was made in a clothing factory rather than a shoe factory. UA believes by doing this, the shoes have a better fit. UA also developed the shoes without shoe inserts. This not only saves money, but it gives the wearer more connection to the shoes.
Under Armour Gemini 2 Improvements
The UA SpeedForm® Gemini 2 is an update to the Gemini 1. Improvements to the Gemini 2 include added foam to the heel and arch for more cushioning, an updated heel counter for better lock down, and an updated mesh for improved Fit, breathability and a more roomy toe box. The improvements do come at a cost. The new Gemini 2 weighs in at 10.4 oz vs the older Gemini’s 8.5 oz.
Visually the Gemini 1 and Gemini 2 look very similar and unless you knew what to look for they could easily be mistaken for each other.
Notice the slightly larger heel cushioning and a more robust heel counter.
UA added some reinforcement to the lacing and slightly different mesh.
The soles look almost identical.

Reinforced lacing holes at the top. The laces have ridges for better hold when tied.
As you can see upper allows a ton of air to flow into the shoes.

The Apollo 2 is designed for short distance, fast pace, sprints. Inside they have a message “I Will Run Fast”. It has very little in the way of arch/heel support. The Gemini was designed for training and longer races. It’s a few oz heavier, can take more of a pounding and is much more forgiving over longer distances. Your legs simply don’t feel beaten up. Another thing I notice is I can actually wear the shoes after a hard run. This isn’t always the case with other shoes I have worn. Sometimes I just couldn’t wait to take them off.
I have almost 200 miles on the Gemini 2 now and the only really significant wear is on the forefoot sole’s outside lugs. My typical running shoe wear tends to be on the bottom outside and these shoes have held up really well. I haven’t felt any loss in cushioning or structural breakdown. The uppers are in perfect shape with zero splitting or cracks.
UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 Final Thoughts
For me the Gemini 2 has been one of the best running trainer/distance shoes I have worn and I have worn a lot. The shoes fit literally like a glove. The lacing system is just about perfect and the laces stay tied with their ridge type grip. The heel tension system works and really hugs your heel, keeping it firmly in place. With a price tag of $129, they aren’t cheap, but are certainly in the ball park for comparable shoes. Most people should easily get 300 miles of wear on the Gemini’s. For me, I am thinking that I will probably want to switch to a new pair after 300 miles. Heck maybe by then Under Armour will send us the Gemini 2 ‘Record Equipped’.

2016 Update – Under Armour Gemini 2
2016 Update: As you may or may not know, we like to come back to our reviews from time to time and give an update when things change or we discover something new. Well I am here to tell you that my pair of Under Armour Gemini 2’s are still going strong. I have over 500 miles on them and they are just now staring to show wear on the bottoms and this is after thinking they would only last 300 miles. They still feel great, they look great and realistically could probably go another 200-300 miles. The uppers have absolutely zero wear on them. The insides and sock-liner look almost new.
I can not remember a running shoe lasting this long or looking this good.
As you can see from the image, the only real wear is on the outside of the mid-foot sole. Since I am a forefoot runner it makes sense that the shoes would wear at this location. I also have a tendency to land on the outside and roll in-word. This wear pattern is known as supination or being a supinator. While I do supinate, I consider myself more of a neutral runner.
