The Magic of 10,000 Steps

If you are looking for the silver bullet to achieve 10,000 steps daily, you might be disappointed.  Realistically there isn’t some mystical magic potion or juju juice to getting your 10,000 steps in.  It’s a daily pursuit of consistency and dedication.

When you join communities such as Fitbit, Garmin, MapMyFitness or Polar, the default goal they usually set for each member is the magical number of 10,000 steps a day.  While realistically it could be any number, 10,000 seems to be the standard and is a very achievable goal.  The American Heart Association uses the 10,000 steps standard as a guideline to follow for improving overall health and decreasing risk of heart disease.

For those who are just getting started, 10,000 steps might feel too daunting.  Because of this you can always adjust the goal downward to meet your fitness level.  For those over achievers or crazy fitness buffs, adjusting the goal upward to 12,000 or more, can add a lot of challenge to each day’s activities.

So where did 10,000 Steps Come from?

Great question. The origins of 10,000 Steps dates back to Japan in 1960 when a person by the name up Dr. Yoshiro Hatano determined that the average Japanese person took between 3,500 to 5000 steps per day. The team concluded that if people increased their daily step count to 10,000, they would become healthier and as a result thinner.

How Far Is 10000 Steps

So How Far Is 10,000 Steps?

Ok now we are getting somewhere.  10,000 steps is solely dependent on stride length.  The longer stride a person takes, the further they are going to walk.  Of course the opposite is true for someone with a shorter stride.  A few calculations are required to determine how far you need to walk to get 10,000 steps in.  Luckily there plenty of smart watches that do the calculations for you including step counters from Polar, Garmin, Fitbit and more.
